Debrecen is situated near the eastern boarder of Hungary, 220 km away from Budapest. Being the capital of Hajdú-Bihar County, Debrecen is the second most populous city in Hungary with its 208 thousand inhabitants. Over the last few years, the city has seen several developments executed.

The city centre underwent a complete overhaul and was built into a huge walking street. On the main square Europe’s largest ceramics fountain was built with an impressive 20-meter diameter. An indoor Mediterranean spa, unique in the country, has been serving the recreation of guests for several years, while the Kölcsey Conference Centre, opened for the public in February 2006, serves as the regional bastion of culture and tourism.

Debrecen, the city of festivals

Several hundred thousand visitors come to Debrecen every year to take part in the various festivals; the most famous of them being the Flower Carnival. Other significant events worth mentioning are the Spring- and Autumn Festivals, the Béla Bartók International Choir Competition, the International Jazz Days and the International Brass and Marching Band Festival. To our great pleasure these events are becoming more and more popular.

Debrecen, the city of sports

Nationally and internationally significant and acknowledged sport life has been going on in the city’s sport clubs. The exponent teams of football, basketball, women’s and men’s handball can be proud of their favourable results. Beside these team sports, the athletes of Debrecen have also reached national and international success in several individual sports, such as athletics, aerobics, boxing, triathlon, badminton and motor track racing. The city has also advanced in sport developments. People longing for sports are welcomed in a modern athletics stadium surrounded by the wonderful, green area of the Nagyerdő. Furthermore, the largest arena of the eastern region, the Főnix Hall, which gave home to several world competitions, is also located here. In 2006 opened the Debrecen Sports Swimming Pool which is the most modern swimming pool in Hungary. In addition to the already existing sport facilities a new football stadium meeting every international requirement will be built in the city. Moreover, Debrecen is also a cultural and educational focus point, where 29 000 students study at the integrated University of Debrecen.

Our national events and the numerous national and international sporting championships are making the city of Debrecen known all around the world.
